I found this blog, and absolutely love it:

If you are considering leaving the law, check it out, because it may inspire you.  If not, check it out anyway, because it is witty and well-written.

  1. So, what made you decide to inflict law school on yourself in the first place?

    1. I decided in about middle or high school that I wanted to be a lawyer, majored in psychology and political science at college both because it was interesting and because I thought it would be a good foundation for law school, and picked my law school for its very strong environmental and international law programs. I wanted to go into public interest environmental law, but for any number of reasons (location, visa status, salary), the job I chose was in civil defense litigation, at a fairly small firm where I had my own case load from Day 1. It was exciting and interesting until the lack of work-life balance and the hostility of the profession wore me down. I switched jobs once, hated that even more, went back to my old firm, and finally quit cold turkey.

What about you? What inspired you to go to law school?

  2. What inspired me to go to law school was a combination of ambition and fear of actually entering the world of work after college with only a B.S. in engineering.

Plus, I was good at standardized tests and I could make up for a low GPA with a good LSAT.

In hindsight, I should not have picked a career by essentially picking a profession out of a vending machine based on estimated future income.

I tried intellectual property law. That wasn't very fun. Now I'm doing Social Security/ERISA disability cases on the plaintiff's side.

I still don't have the slightest idea what I want to go do with myself, professionally. I get clients from TV ads, so there's no shortage of work. Which means that I can sit here and continue doing what I'm doing pretty much indefinitely.
